Sendai Nikon Corp., a Nikon Corp. subsidiary, will build light detection and ranging (lidar) sensors for autonomous drive and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for Velodyne Lidar Inc.

Production is set to begin in the second half of 2019.

“Mass production of our high-performance lidar sensors is key to advancing Velodyne’s immediate plans to expand sales in North America, Europe, and Asia,” Velodyne President and Chief Business Development Officer Marta Hall says. “It is our goal to produce lidar in the millions of units with manufacturing partners such as Nikon.”

Nikon invested $25 million in Velodyne in 2018 and plans to combine its optical and precision technologies with Velodyne’s lidar sensor technology. The companies are investigating a business alliance to collaborate in technology development and manufacturing.;

Google’s Waymo to build autonomous cars in Detroit American Axle plant

Google autonomous car division Waymo plans to upfit cars into autonomous vehicles later this year by working with American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM). Waymo will lease space from American Axle’s Advanced Technology Development Center nearly a block away from its Detroit world headquarters. AAM calls the center a facility “dedicated to the acceleration of innovation, collaboration, and the development of advanced products, processes, and systems.”

Traditionally used to test processes, equipment, and components during early stage product development, the center will be Waymo’s hub to upfit Chrysler Pacifica minivans and Jaguar I-Pace electric crossovers with components needed to reach SAE Level 4 autonomous driving – systems drive the vehicle and monitor road conditions; the human driver does not need to take control, but the system can only operate in specific conditions and environments.

The AAM facility puts Waymo directly across the Detroit River from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA)’s Windsor, Canada, plant that makes the Pacifica.;;;

Mobile data router

An EN 51055-compliant NetSys-5304 router facilitates communication in rolling-stock applications that involve vehicle positioning, monitoring, speed control, and collision avoidance. Based on Cisco’s 5915 embedded services router (ESR), an on-board hardware encryption engine ensures secure, uninterrupted handling of all data, video, and voice.

Layer 3 routing protocols establish ad-hoc networks as nodes shift relative to positioning in and out of fixed network range. The NetSys-5304 also includes radio aware routing, quality of service (QoS) support, and a dynamic link exchange protocol. Routing optimization protocols ensure bandwidth for critical wireless nodes in the time and sequence needed to support network communication requirements.

The fanless system provides passive conduction-cooling and reduces maintenance needs. M12 connectors and an IP67 rating ensure that the system can withstand severe environmental conditions, such as intense shock, vibration, and humidity typically found in mobile applications.
