Hybrid machining system

Vertex 55X-H combines a precision-built traditional CNC vertical machining center with a spindle-adapted laser direct energy deposition (DED) powder feed nozzle. Parts can be 3D printed or material can be added to existing parts. The nozzle loads into the tool changer like any conventional tool and is changed automatically via the CNC program, a milling/drilling tool replaces it, and the workpiece can be machined conventionally – including internal features. This machine allows workpieces to be printed to completion with subsequent machining operations.

CAT or HSK spindles offer 15,000rpm to 30,000rpm. An integrated coolant system offers either dry- or wet-machining best practices. The working range is from 550mm to 750mm in X-axis; 600mm to 800mm in Y-axis; and 400mm to 750mm in Z-axis.

Upgraded machining software

To encourage users to take advantage of advanced software features, engineers added new interfaces to Mastercam 2017, including a ribbon tab interface that groups similar functions and displays them in order from simple to more complex. Each tab relates to a type of activity, from creating wireframe geometry to generating tool paths. Editing functions are on the same tab as creation functions so users have easy access to all the tools when needed.

Enhanced features

Dynamic Motion Technology can cut machine time by as much as 75%, helping users get the most out of new and old machines. The technology extends tool life, reduces cycle time, saves wear and tear on machines, and cuts hard materials more easily. New to Mastercam 2017, Micro-Lifts use a line-of-sight approach to move the tool where it needs to go through unobstructed areas, resulting in more efficient, less complex, and shorter travel repositioning during micro-lifting.

Maximum Stock Engagement for select 3D HST finishing tool paths enables users to select a previously made stock model and set the maximum depth to limit how deeply the cutter engages uncut material. HST Raster allows users to limit raster passes relative to a cutoff distance, and then fills in the limited area with perpendicular raster motion to create a clean result.

Mill-Turn now supports multiple sessions, multiple machine groups, and multi-station tool locators for turrets as well as half index positions.

Highfeed milling inserts

The Highfeed 6 milling cutters tackle difficult-to-machine materials from stainless steel to heat-resistant superalloys. The system’s large-diameter cutter bodies are capable of 0.07" (1.8mm) axial depths of cut and feature double-sided inserts with six cutting edges. The cutter also performs in high-feed applications, including face milling and plunging operations. Inserts mount at low lead angles to direct machining forces into the machine tool spindle rather than radially against the side of the tool for less vibration and more predictable performance.
