Electric vehicle (EV) maker Fisker Inc. is partnering with Foxconn, the company best known for making Apple iPhones, to develop and build a new EV. Highlights of their proposed Project PEAR (Personal Electric Automotive Revolution) partnership include:

  • Fisker, Foxconn to jointly develop new segment vehicle
  • Foxconn to manufacture >250,000 vehicles annually
  • Global market scope: North America, Europe, China, India
  • Projected Q4 2023 production start

EV transmission gearing

The Eaton Vehicle Group is developing gearing solutions for electrified vehicles (EVs). Anthony Cronin, director of EV gearing at Eaton, says the company is focusing development efforts on energy efficiency; weight; and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). Eaton uses in-house design capabilities including:

  • Micro- and macro-gear geometry modelling to improve NVH, efficiency, reliability
  • Minimized thrust-load bearing-loss to improve reliability, simplify, or downsize bearings
  • Lubrication simulation, selection for reliability, efficiency

Eaton has identified opportunities to improve gearing system efficiency up to 1%, reduce weight up to 20%, and shrink the size up to 10%.

LG doubling down on US battery production


LG Energy Solution will invest more than $4.5 billion in the U.S. by 2025 to expand battery production capacity, creating more than 10,000 more jobs for employees and subcontractors while securing an additional 70GWh of battery production capacity.

In addition to those internal investments, LG Energy Solution and General Motors are discussing plans to build a second joint venture plant in the U.S. – the first Ultium Cells LLC plant is under construction in Lordstown, Ohio.

“The goals of the U.S. president and automakers will be a propelling factor in the growth of the country’s electric vehicle and energy storage systems markets,” LG Energy Solution CEO Jong Hyun Kim says, “LG Energy Solution is dedicated to expanding its battery production capacity and structuring a stable, localized supply chain that provides everything from R&D to production.”

LG Energy Solution established its first U.S. research facility in 2000. The latest project will give the company a total production capacity of more than 110GWh in the U.S.

Within the first half of 2021, LG Energy Solution will select at least two location candidates for a factory to manufacture various types of batteries in the U.S. The new LG Energy Solution facility will produce pouch cell batteries for EVs and energy storage systems (ESS), and cylindrical cell EV batteries rapidly increasing in demand.
